Business Description

SMD Steel operates two strategic locations in Foxworth, Mississippi, and Snead, Alabama, providing a comprehensive range of steel processing and fabrication services. With a leadership team holding over 100 years of combined experience in the steel industry, SMD Steel is positioned to serve the growing needs of customers in power transmission, structural fabrication, and industrial components. At the Foxworth, Mississippi facility, SMD Steel specializes in heavy plate processing. This location houses state-of-the-art CNC plasma and oxy-fuel cutting systems capable of handling thick carbon steel plates with precision and repeatability. The facility includes equipment for bevel cutting, enabling efficient weld joint preparation. High-speed drilling machines support operations like countersinking, tapping, and slotting of steel parts. Robust material handling infrastructure, including overhead cranes and forklifts, allows for safe and efficient movement of heavy plates through the cutting and machining process. The Mississippi site maintains high standards of quality control. Inspections are conducted throughout the process, with dimensional verification and traceability maintained through part marking systems. Quality records, material certifications, and customer specifications are closely followed to ensure compliance and customer satisfaction. The Snead, Alabama facility is focused on the fabrication of welded steel arms used in power transmission systems. With dedicated in-house welding operations, SMD Steel supports utility customers by providing precision-fabricated components that are ready for galvanizing and field installation. The facility is equipped to produce arms ranging from 6 to 24 inches in diameter, up to 24 feet in length, and up to inch in wall thickness depending on design requirements. Submerged Arc Welding (SAW) is utilized for high-strength, automated seam welding, while Flux-Cored Arc Welding (FCAW) is used for bracket and structural attachments. All welding is performed in compliance with AWS D1.1 standards, and weld procedure specifications (WPS) and welder qualifications (WPQ) are maintained for traceability and conformance. SMD Steel works primarily with carbon steel materials, including grades like ASTM A36, A572, and A709, processing them into customized parts and assemblies for the transmission, lighting, and structural markets. Both locations are optimized for handling high-mix, low-volume projects with a high level of flexibility. Customer drawings are used as the manufacturing baseline, and quality and documentation controls ensure accurate execution from receiving to final shipment. Logistically, SMD Steel is well-positioned with access to Southern U.S. and Gulf Coast transportation networks. Finished goods are packaged and labeled to meet customer requirements, and support is provided for just-in-time (JIT) delivery strategies. With dedicated teams at both sites, SMD Steel offers reliable, responsive service with fast turnaround and integrated quality assurance.
